Texas Longhorn Australia (TLA)  Inaugural Breed Sale,  13 June 2010

The long weekend in June was a pretty exciting time for breeders of Texas Longhorn cattle in Australia. An excellent selection of cattle from breeders from the North Queensland to South New South Wales met with great interest, and a saleyard full of buyers ensured this inaugural sale fixture for the Texas Longhorn cattle was a great success.

The sale comprised 56 lots covering a line of classy purebred females, several purebred bulls, some very impressive trophy steers, a range of cross-bred females and bulls, and a handy pen of time-event steers.  A semen package and a skull were also available for keen bidders.

Ben and Kristy Newbury (Yarrow Creek Texas Longhorns) topped the bidding for the lovely 9mth old Coolamon Tempters Rebel, a very promising little bull by Tempter. This bull, out of Coolamon Rebel, was bred by John Bastardi of Coolamon.

In the female section, quality, USA registered cattle were in demand and selling to a top of $3,200.Southern Cross Millie, a September 2001 born daughter of Westward Ho and bred from Southern Cross Eureka, sold with her 2010 born bull calf at foot sired by Superdot. This eye catching pairing was knocked down to Gordon and Desley Davidson from North Queensland. The deserving new owners are pictured left with their new additions.

The sale was ably carried out by Bert Hewitt from Gunnedah Stock and Station Agent, Garven & Cousens.

Dinner and meeting - Gunnedah Services Club
Saturday night was a lovely occasion to meet and, for many of us, to put names to faces of people we’ve spoken and (remotely!) traded cattle with for the last couple of years.  After the lovely two-course meal, the first formal meeting of the TLA was held. A committee was elected, with long-term breeder and promoter, John Bastardi elected President.  The meeting voted to incorporate the association, retaining its current name.

The meeting hails an exciting beginning for the many enthusiasts devoted to preserving and improving this unique and traditional breed.

Visit to Geoff and Belinda Dawsons property

Just after lunch that a convoy of TLA members and friends headed out for the 25 km drive to “Dallas”, home of the Dawson family’s Skinny Lizard Longhorn herd.

After a stop in the driveway to view the cattle it was up to the house for a cuppa and some delicious scones and slices.

We'll load more pictures of the visit to Geoff's place soon.
